Revolution Vivid Baked Highlighters in Pink Lights and Peach Lights - Cruelty Free Drugstore Makeup

Do not try and highlight with a brush like this unless you want to look crazy... Its just so pretty and silver I wanted to show it off.
At the end of December I picked up these two baked highlighters from Revolution London through LuxPlus ( 'cause no one was having any luck with the TAM Beauty website over Christmas). I really enjoy peachy pink highlights and had religiously used the MUA pink highlighter for several months before getting these.

So on the left we have Pink Lights and on the right Peach Lights. As you can see I've really been playing with these and I've rubbed off some of the less indented design on the Peach one.

These retail for £3 on the Revolution and Superdrug website in the UK and $6 at Ulta in the States, though I'm not 100% sure all the colours are available. You get 7.5 grams of product in each, so you get a lot of product for your money. The packaging is really sturdy but it is a little cheap looking and feeling. I also really hate it when baked products come with unnecessary domed packaging. It just means I can't stack them and that's a big issue as my storage is a little limited.

OK so they miraculously switched sides in the photo above (the makeup pixies did it, honest...?!) but as you can see the formula isn't consistent. Peach lights is a bit smoother and more finely milled than pink lights, which has some clunky glittery fallout from it. I prefer peach lights and the fallout is the reason I haven't really played around with it much.  They are both beautiful and can be built up to be really intense if that's your thing, I am personally more a fan of a subtle healthy glow though.

Both highlighters have a very frosty silvery sheen to them, as a pale girl from a cold climate that suits me fine. I mean look at my wrist, its almost as white as the background. These probably wouldn't suit anyone with a skin tone that much deeper than mine, though I do think they have a gold, a bronze and a rose gold one that would probably look lovely on deeper skin tones.

And this is the above two swatches blended out. I did my best to not smudge them into each other but as I hadn't set the finger swipes out intending to blend out (I like the live dangerously and go with the swatch flow). It was a little bit difficult. Far more of the Pink Lights base colour shows once its blended, its really clear on the other edge of my hand where that highlight stops. Peach Lights doesn't do this as much, but that might be due to the peachy tone being closer to my skin colour than the pink one. Both shades do end up a little sparkly, but if you apply with a light hand, and aren't packing them on like I was for the swatches, they can give a really nice, subtle, glowy highlight.

Would I recommend them?

Overall, its a big, fat yes from me. They are a little glittery, and the pink one has some fallout, but they are £3 for 7.5 grams of products (which will last you forever) and the peach one is so pretty.

If you are wanting something pink and highlighty, but not glittery at all, my current favourite for subtle days in the Revolution Strobe Highlighter in Moon Glow Lights. Its just a lovely, subtle powder, that catches the light in the most beautifully natural way.

Thats all for now duckies.

Yes To... Blueberries Smooth & Shine Shampoo and Conditioner Review - Cruelty Free Hair Care

When it comes to buying cruelty free I'm great with makeup and skincare, but when it came to hair care I found my options slightly limited and that I was a bit confused about what was and wasn't cruelty free. That's why I was delighted when an Instagramer I follow posted saying she'd been able to pick up some of the Yes To hair care range in Boots. I made a mental note to look out for them next time I was in.

Yes To are a cruelty free brand (Leaping Bunny certified) that try and make products that are at least 95% natural, affordable and packed full of fruit and veg based goodness. Boots stock most of the range, however they don't seem to have the Cucumber colour protection one, which is a little bit odd. They also don't stock the 500ml bottles I can see advertised on Yes To's website for a couple of the shampoos.

I chose the Yes To Blueberries smooth and shine shampoo and conditioner for frizzy hair, because my hair has a habit of being more than a little out of control. Boots also stock the scalp relief, volumising, and ultra moisturising ones.

Now to get down to business. The packaging is fairly standard for shampoo, two big squeezy tubes that you pour from the bottom. I personally prefer this design to stiffer plastic bottles as I find it easier to get every last drop of product out of them. I also like that these look very uniform but as the shampoo has a soft blue panel on the front they're also easy to tell apart, even if you get shampoo in your eyes.

Back of the pack has a lot of info on it about whats in the shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo has blueberries and kale leaf extract in it, and it has an unexpected herbal lemon kind of scent. Its like that plant with leaves that smell like lemon when you rub them (googled it, its lemon balm. The shampoo smells exactly like lemon balm). Its really pleasant and I think I prefer it this kind of scent to overly fruity or floral one.

The conditioner is advertised as being a mix of blueberries and shea butter extract. Having now read the ingredients for both they each have shea butter and kale extract in them. The shampoo just has more of the kale extract than the conditioner.

I just took a photo of this as I don't think I've ever seen a sealed shampoo bottle before.
The shampoo is really nice and thick, it lathers well and leaves my hair feeling really nice and clean.  The conditioner is nice and thick, but also washes out easily. Also, as I've already said, it smells amazing.

So here's a photo from the first morning I used it. I was loving it. My hair was soft and shiny, had plenty of bounce and smelled really nice. This is how my hair has looks every time I use this. I love it.

And this is how my hair looks the day after I've washed it. This looks extreme, but this is how messed up my hair gets on a regular basis. Also its easily tamed. Some frizz ease spray and a tangle teezer and it's at least ponytail friendly.

These products do this consistently though. So I know day one is great, and if I go for a second day it needs a bit of love. With most hair products I can't tell what the first day will be like, let alone the second. Being able to tell exactly what my hair will be doing day to day is something I've never been able to until now and I really appreciate it.

For that reason (and the smell, have I said how nice it is yet?) this is now my favourite thing to wash my hair with, even with the crazy second day hair. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good shampoo for frizzy hair, or hair care that smells amazing. Its also cruelty free, and having tried some of their skincare too, and I would recommend Yes To... products to anyone looking for skin and hair care that's not tested on animals.

Given Yes To.., products a go? Let me know what you think.

Collection #BlushAndGlow Mini Palette Review and Swatches - Cruelty Free Cosmetics

So at the start of last month I went up to my parents, and only realised once I was there I had forgotten any blush or highlighter. This wouldn't normally be a big deal, I don't always wear makeup (especially when I'm at home), and if I was in the city I could nip out and buy more. However I had arranged to meet friends when I arrived back in Glasgow  in a couple of days, so I kind of needed some blush. My options were look incredibly pale, the two tiny makeup stands in the local chemist (neither of which were cruelty free, so therefore not an option), or attempt to find something in Inverness.

I chose Inverness, however that nearly didn't pay off at all. Maybe it's because I'm so used to Glasgow but I expected more from it. Between the large Boots and Superdrug in the town centre, this was all I could find. I was really hoping for a NYX stand, as I like their solo blushes. Failing that something from MUA or Makeup Revolution as theirs are OK to.

This is the Collection (previous Collection 2000) #BlushAndGlow palette. It cost £4.99 and you get 18g of product, split between four pans. A contour, a highlight and two blush shades. It was the closest thing I could find to what I actually wanted (for less than Urban Decay prices). It looks like great value on paper, however once I got it back to my parents and tried it, my first thoughts were just cheap, cheap, cheap.

The main packaging is cardboard, with a plastic panel, and in times gone by I would have been OK with this. I've been spoiled by the likes of MUA and Makeup Revolution that manage to keep costs low, but still package things up nicely. This just feels wrong. It does have a magnetic closure on it, which I have fun snapping, but that's just because I'm easily amused.

So I did the swatches and photographed them in two different lights. These powders are incredibly stiff, chunky and apply patchily to the skin. Just check the swatches on the far right or far left for this. Also the highlighter really draws attention to any skin texture.

They also don't apply well with brushes. There's no subtlety, you have to go all in as the powder is so stiff. So if you're pale, with a lot of skin texture and don't like looking like you're at clown academy, I would not recommend this.

TLDR: Cheap, poor quality packaging. Stiff, chunky powder that doesn't apply well. Not good.

MUA Velvet Lip Lacquer in Zest & Kooky Review, Swatches and Wear Test - Cruelty Free Lipstick

So a while ago (like back in the Summer) I picked up these velvet lacquers from Superdrug. However I never really got round to trying them out. I think I might have had a nude one in the past that I hated and it somehow put me off. They cost £3 each, making them super affordable if you're on a budget. You also get a bigger range of colours than with the Primark ones I reviewed a few months back (full review here).

The packaging itself is OK, its really standard for liquid lipstick, round tube with a screw cap and a doe-foot applicator. It feels far less cheap and nasty than the Primark ones. Also its a standard short doe-foot, not one of the weird long bendy ones, which is good.

So these swatch well and as you can see they dry really bright. One thing I should add right now is they have a really sweet almost candy-esque smell. It's a bit fruity but not overly so, and I find it a little off-putting. Apart from that the formula is OK, both shades needed two coats to stop them being patchy, and they took a little while to dry, however once they were on, they didn't feel drying at all which was a nice surprise. I did watch a review on Youtube where the v-logger said she found them really drying, so it might be a tolerance thing. My jumping on point for matte lipsticks was LA Splash and those are basically industrial grade paint for your face. I don't think I could find anything drying after using them for a couple of months.

So Zest is a super bright red-orange colour.

And this is Kooky. I thought it would be redder than it is.

As with the Primark review and Sleek review, I decided to leave it on for a couple of hours over dinner and see what happened.

So I only had it on for about three hours and in this time I had two cups of tea and a wrap with chicken and peppers. My dinner was about the least oily thing I've eaten in a long time so I'm really disappointed that half the bottom lip wore off. When I tested Velvet Slippers from Sleek I ate a whole plate of pasta and cheese sauce and it wore off less.

So scoring time, colour choice, intensity, packaging and price wise they get full marks, however they smell weird, don't seem to wear well and don't stain making very obvious when they wear off. I'm going to go with 5/10 overall. If you want the bright colours then go for it, if not I would recommend the ones from Sleek that last far far longer.

Had a similar experience with these? Or did you find other colours lasted better? Let me know.

Project: Use up seventeen by the start of 2017

So a while ago I tried to start a bathroom de-clutter project (full post here), and although looking at the photos I can see I made some progress, it ultimately fell flat on its backside. Every month I have a bag of empties I start writing a post about, then something happens and I loose all interest.

I decided choosing specific items, marking them and then working on them and them alone may be a better way of going about it. So I rounded up a bunch of stuff that's either almost done, or that I'm sick of the sight of (cough*Elvive Shampoo*cough). Also some of them aren't cruelty free, so have been hanging around for a long time, and I want to start 2017 more cruelty free than ever.

There are 24 products to start with and depending on how the first month goes, I may add in other items in December when I check in.

Hair Care

I honestly don't love anything in this picture. As you can see everything is over half done too, so I have tried to make it work. I think I'll be finished everything except the Elvive by the start of December. If its still not completely by the 6th of January, whats left is going in the bin. I've been working on it for most of the year in between other products, I don't really like it and I want it gone. I have a Gliss spray I'll add in if the Pantene one runs out and some argon oil that can replace the Frizz Ease when its done. Have I mentioned how little I feel Frizz Ease does for my hair? That's maybe a rant for my empties once its done. I don't have any other shampoo/conditioner to add in, but I think what I have here will keep me going.

Face Care

All the products here are cruelty free, and the three Superdrug products are pretty good. I actually really like the exfoliating scrub and will probably buy it again. I just have a tonne of face care right now and want to get through it. If you're looking for a nice, micro-bead free scrub that's cruelty free and cheap, I would recommend this. The mask is OK (full review here), but I own and can get better easily, also it smells pretty weird. I used up half the jar just trying to write that review, so three or four more uses and its done. It will probably be done by the start of  December. If that is the case I have 4 or 5 foil packet masks I'll add into the mix.

Face Make-Up

This section is a little same-y if I'm being honest. Two mattifying setting sprays that are almost done, the NYX one is OK and the MUA one doesn't seem to do much, but I bought them so I'll use them up. I have a couple of others that are a bit better I can add in when these run out. Two primers I'm not crazy about, and the Maybelline one is old now so I want it gone. Maybelline Lumi Touch concealer, again its old and I don't love it. I've been using it as an eye-shadow base up until now and its been going quickly enough so I don't know why I wouldn't be able to finish it. As for the powders, the Soap and Glory one is old and was crumbling and the MUA one got broken. I had hit pan on both of them and then re-pressed them when the MUA one broke. If these get finished (and I hope to finish the Soap and Glory one at least, if not its going in the bin with the shampoo) I might add in one of the loose powders I'm not crazy about.

Other Make-Up

MUA Mascara and Sweet Sheen Lip Balm, both of these are OK. I like the rose colour of the balm and it is moisturising, and I've used it enough for the print to wear off, but not enough to keep it. The mascara is OK too, I just own better. MUA products are usually cheap and cheerful, and, with the exception of some lip products I'm going to review shortly, none of them are really bad. The L'Occitane Shea Butter lip balm (travel sized) is almost done and it is my favourite lip balm product of all time, so much so I will pay the £7+ it costs for a full sized one. I got this in a set last Christmas and its been open since then so I want it gone now cause its a bit old. And lastly, the Cynthia Rowley eye pencil (mini). I really don't like this. I got it as a gift when I subscribed to something and if I'd paid I would have been really disappointed. It doesn't stay in the waterline at all. It won't be done by Christmas but I'm going to try. Anything that's left is going in the bin as the cheap NYX pencils are better.

Perfume

Ghost has been my favourite perfume since I was in high school. I loved it and everyone knew
I loved it, so I usually get a bottle or gift set for my birthday or Christmas. Unfortunately, I've been unable to find any info on whether or not its cruelty free, in fact all I've found is confusing reports on who actually owns the brand. I've had to make peace with the other bottle I own being the last one I may ever own. Most of my family are aware of my cruelty free stance on things, so I'm not sure if they'll steer clear of beauty related gifts this Christmas. If they don't, what I get will probably be from Lush as they know that's safe (and I love Lush, give me all the Lush). As you can see this bottle only has a tiny wee bit left in the bottom, I'm going to put it in my handbag and that'll probably be gone by mid-December.

Things I forgot to photograph first time

The body butter is nice and came out a three pack I was given last Christmas, I've already used one and would like to have all three done by the start of January. This wont take me long to get through, the other one took me 3 or 4 weeks of steady use. Once its done I'll add the last one in. And we have another dam Elvive product, lucky this is mostly done. I don't like it. I don't like the smell, I don't like the way it sets making it a pain in the butt to wash out, and I don't like it taking up space in my bathroom. Its only two or three uses away from being done though, hopefully it'll be gone by December. I know this looks weird in the photo below but its cause it has a shimmer in it (like the shampoo), its not gone bad. I promise.

Wish me luck guys, I'll let you know how I'm getting on in a month.

Superdrug Coconut Water & Coconut Oil Hair Masque Review - Cruelty Free

A while ago, around mid August, I picked this masque up with the intention of taking it on holiday to treat my poor sun damaged hair. In the end I didn't pack it, due to bulk, so it never got used or reviewed in my holiday products blog (link here).

Fast forward to last weekend. Friday was Halloween day at work and I went as a zombie bride. Unfortunately that meant washing my hair on Thursday, brushing it once and then leaving it, Friday morning I woke up, sprayed some dry shampoo into it, fuzzed up the roots with my fingers and then didn't touch it again. By Saturday morning when it became time to deal with things like washing it and looking presentable, my hair really wasn't in a good place.

That's when I remembered about this. I don't use a lot of hair masque type products right now (have in the past, will again in the future) as my current flat only has a very deep, and very awesome *cough*, bath in it. I find trying to rinse anything thicker than normal conditioner out my hair a pain without the use of a shower head and good water pressure. My hair was so knotted and brittle feeling I made an exception though.

Before getting in the bath I sprayed a tonne of de-tangling spray through my hair and tried to get most of the tugs out with a Tangle Teezer. It hurt a lot, and when I was done I had some very fried, very dry, very brittle feeling triangle head hair (when your hair just frizzes out from the top, getting bigger and bigger and giving you the appearance of a hair triangle)

I then washed my hair twice with the Yes to Blueberries Smooth & Shine Shampoo. I'll have a full review of both this and the conditioner coming out in the next couple of days as I've now been using for a month(spoiler alert, I like it). I rinsed it with a jug, squeezed the water out my hair and applied a couple of big dollops of this to all the hair from my ears down. I then twisted it all together and lay back and watched some How I Met Your Mother... Yeah I occasionally watch Netflix in the bath, if it's one that I'm going to be in for a while. Lush review, Netflix. Hair masque, Netflix. Rough week so drinking cider and wanting to lounge, well OK, I'm maybe going to listen to Classic Rock in that type of bath, if not though, Netflix.

It's a really thick, but very liquid, conditioner. It's not set or stiff and my only criticism is that I would have preferred it to come in a big squeezy bottle. I don't love sticking my fingers into and having to scoop wet products out of pots.

After about 15 minutes I rinsed it out. It took a bit more work than standard conditioner but not loads, maybe one or two extra jugs of water. I don't think I would even notice if I was using it in the shower, but I don't have a shower , so meh. Once I'd blotted my hair dry using a microfibre towel, I brushed it again and it went so much smoother than before the bath. I then smoothed some of the Superdrug Hair Therapy Macadamia Oil through it, which is one of my favourite hair products ever. I didn't feel right reviewing it and missing out a step I would always do as it wouldn't be a fair comparison.  I then left my hair to dry naturally.

Once my hair dried, I was amazed at how soft, shiny and bouncy my hair was. It eliminated almost all my frizz (the frizz is never completely gone, never) and left my hair soft and shiny without killing the curl. The masque only cost me £3.99, and is currently on offer at £2.59, so I really hadn't expected much at all. It's really good though. Also it smells really, really nice. My other half even commented on how coconutty it was.

I used it again today as well and had the same results. I've been away in the Czech Republic using the combination of Lush Shampoo and Conditioner from the holiday review linked above. And, even though I took my macadamia oil and used it religiously, I think the mix of not a thick enough conditioner and my hair being constantly exposed to cold weather for four days (all we did was explore, and occasionally stop at a pub) left it feeling a bit more frizzy and tangled than usual. It feels back to normal now though (and smells delicious). This is definitely something I would recommend to anyone looking for a moisturising masque for frizzy or dry hair, or a deep conditioner that's also cruelty free.

Given this a go? Let me know what you think.

Primark Beauty Haul - First Impressions

So on Sunday, which is now three days ago and I started typing this up the day I bought it. I've been busy trying to sell half my wardrobe on eBay and lumbered with technical problems. Anyway thats changing the subject. I discovered something amazing. All of Primarks PS. range is completely cruelty free, and it is cheap as chips.

 So heres what I got.

Nothing I bought cost more £2.50, which I though was great, however I couldn't get everything I wanted as the displays were nothing short of disgusting. Full of busted packaging and smashed powder over everything. It took me maybe 5 minutes to find 2 lipliners in the very large display that weren't opened. I wanted a couple of the lipsticks but I couldn't find any I liked that hadn't been opened and rubbed all over who knows what *boke*

 9 Shade Eyeshadow Palette £2.50
This really didn't impress me. The packaging was nice and chic however the pigmentation was pretty crap and they were so chalky and powdery. Also most of them look the same. Can't see me ever using it.

 Bronze 3pk Nail Polish £2.50
There's are really pretty. I've been rocking the copper tone on the left for 3 days now and its just beginning to chip. It doesn't dry hard as quickly as I'd like but for under £1 a bottle and colours that are this gorgeous, I can deal with it.

 Liquid Foundation in Ivory £2.50
Yicks, I hate full foundation. Hardly ever wear it. Maybe I should as my skin is constantly crapy, but I can't do it. I hate things that feel heavy and sticky and hot on my skin. I walk over a mile in my newly applied makeup to work before anyone even sees me in it. I've not put it on my face yet as my skin has been really sore and aggrivated lately and I don't want to risk making it worse. The colour looks like it would be the one closest to my skin and I will definetly give it a shot and let you know what I think .

Lipliners in Light Pink and Nude £1 each
I'd heard great things about these so I was annoyed when I could only get two that werent all funked up and ruined. I was needing more wearable lipliner colours so these were a good shout. They are really pretty good and I will be looking into getting some more of these. The nude one goes really well with my favourite work lipstick (NYX Butter lipstick in Pops). Winner.

Smudge Liner in Black £1
I haven't played with this much yet but it seems very nice. Very black, can make a sharp line but when smudged it can be softened to a nice smokey glow. Will use this some more and report back in.

Two Pack Eyeliner in White and Natural £1
Two eyeliners for £1, yes please. I was really unsure about these but once I swatched them on my hand I was sold. The white is super bright and the natural one is different to anything I already own. Not waterline tested them yet but again will test some more and file my report with you.

Items I didnt photograph

Loose face powder £2.00
It's loose powder, didn't know how to photograph it, didn't know why you would want me to. Its nice enough, rivals some drug store stuff. Holes are a bit big in the packaging but nothing disasterous.

Perfume stick in Fuchsia £2.00
Solid perfume in a pencil stick. It smells nice, not super strong but thats not bad. The pencil means you don't need to get it all over your fingers and the clear wax is great as you don't end up with a coloured streak on your neck or arms if it doesn't get rubbed in right. Now it lives in my handbag.

Texture Spray £2 (or £2.50, I can't remember)
They make haircare so I might as well try it.  It smells nice and helps beachify my hair. Like it

All in all I'm impressed, even if the displays were gross. I'm probably not going to rush back for more anytime soon (although they are launching a "pro" range which I might need to checkout).

Tried any Primark Beauty, let me know what you think.

Makeup Revolution - Solo Blush Review

So lets have a little chat about Makeup Revolution.

Makeup Revolution are a UK based brand that have a reputation for making fantastic quality products that rival and often dupe high end brands such as Urban Decay and Too Faced. Their products aren't tested on animals either, which is awesome.

I've been using there stuff for a few months now and I largely find the quality to be amazing with their eye and lip products. Their eyeshadows are usually amazing, nicely pigmented and easy to work with. Sometimes you come across one or two in a palette that aren't as good as the others, but, seeing as I paid under a tenner for 20 shades, I'm not going to loose sleep or claim to be ripped off if one or two are a bit pants.

The only area they have ever disappointed me in was their blush palettes. I own two and just found the quality to be no where near as good, also out of 8 pans you get maybe 3 or 4 that are unique colours and the rest are all very, very similar to each other. Not a fan.

A while ago, in a moment of madness, I picked up one of their single colours in the colour Treat. I say moment of madness as it looks a stunning shade of orange in the pan. I don't know if I genuinely picked up the wrong thing, it looked different in Superdrugs insane lighting or I just spaced and thought pumpkin-chic was in this season.

However, this little guy is the business.

Now, buyer beware, as its orange. When on my face it just gives me a warm peachy glow though. I don't know if this would look good on anyone else. I have really rosy red cheeks so it might be mixing with my skin tone, or it might just be an awesome colour. I don't know but I love it.

I love it so much I went and bought another one. I got Now!. A soft pinky shade that reminds me of Dandelion by Benefit. Its really nice as well. Really, really nice.

Yesterday I went out and bought the other four shades they do so I have them all.
Top Row (ltr) Love & Treat, Middle Row (ltr) Now! and Hot!, Bottom Row (ltr) Sugar and Wow!
As you can see some of the shades are kind of similar and I'm honestly a little scared of putting Hot! anywhere as its so pink. This photo isnt the best colourwise though as its made Love and Sugar look far more similar than they actually are. Love is far more cool and brown and Sugar is more like a warm muted pink.

The only thing I'm really not crazy about is the packaging. It looks and feels really cheap and nasty. The white plastic does nothing for the products (and the only other brand I can think of that used white plastic is Natural Collection, Boots budget line). Honestly, even if all they changed was the white for another colour, I think it would do wonders. MUA (Superdrugs own brand) has it blush in similar packaging but in black, and it looks so much better. Makeup Reveloution's own eyeshadow singles come in the exact same packaging as these but in black as well, and again, so much less cheap and nasty looking.

Also I'd have preferred it if the pans were either round or square as its hard to swirl a big brush into a rectangle, but that's just me moaning.

I'll keep you updated on how I get on with these, especially Hot! and if you want a post with swatches or me to do one about the blush palettes, let me know.

Makeup Revolution is available at Superdrug in the UK and also you can buy it direct from their website (I know they ship to America, Canada and New Zealand but can't be sure about anywhere else). Also I think some of their products are available in Ulta stores, but from watching American Youtubers I think the selection is pretty limited.
