Lush Halloween Haul - First Impressions and Thoughts

(Firstly let me apologise for the quality of the photos. My laptop is broken so I'm going between phone and small tablet, it's not fun but you gotta do what you gotta do.)

Lush's Halloween collection is one of my favourite things Lush does. Last year I fell in love with the Nightwing shower jelly, and this year I couldn't wait to see what they came out with. Yesterday I made the trip up to the Buchanan Street store to pick some treats, and hopefully no tricks (Sorry, couldn't resist). 

So I picked up eight of the ten Halloween items, the two I didn't get were the Fireside Soap and Lords of Misrule Shower Gel. It wasn't my soap or shower gel supply that was low, so I decided to skip them. The collection is made up of, in total, two soap, four bath bombs, one showed gel, one bubble bar, one bath melt and a shimmer bar.

So this is one I know they pull out the vault year after year and I know it's a big favourite, I'm just not sure why. It might be lovely in the bath, haven't tried it yet, so I could stand corrected but it seems kind of everyday. The smell kind of reminds me of some more of their other ones and midtone green just doesn't scream Halloween to me. If I change my mind once I've used it I'll make sure to let you all know.

Autumn Leaf Bath Bomb

Oh, this smells so good, I think. Citrusy but also outdoorsy. I don't love the first sniff, but they get better and better. By sniff seven or eight it's all I want to smell. Sniff. Sniff. Sniff. I can't wait to use this in the bath. I think it's going to turn the water amazing colours and, if this works the way I hope it will, it'll be bathing in sniff eight for at least half an hour.

Pumpkin Bath Bomb

In terms of most amazing first sniff, this wins hands down. If they bottled this scent and sold it as perfume I would coat myself in the daily. Fruity, citrusy and biscuity. It's gorgeous. If I love it in the bath, I'm going back for more. 

Monsters Ball Bath Bomb

I really like the smell of this one too and it's super cute. Look at the little guy. With his one big eye, all round and stuff. Sadly one of his little horns had gotten a bit scuffed off. Like the pumpkin, if this is nice in the bath I'm stocking up. 

Sparkling Pumpkin Bubble Bar

This is another one from the vault. I know I had it last year and it was nice. I usually don't love the glittery bars but as it was the only Halloween bubble bar I picked it up.

Magic Wand Soap

I made a choice between this and the other one it the collection. This has a really nice subtle tangerine smell. I really like lushes blocks of soap for in the bath (the only one I'll use on my face is Honey I Washed the Kids). This'll be replacing the Mangonificent that's almost done on the sink.

Boo Bath Melt

Look at this little guy. Who's a cute little spookle? You're a cute little spookle. Yes you are. I go through phases of loving and hating these melts. If my skin needs a boost they're great, if my hair gets in the bath though it takes a couple of washes to get in back to normal. 

Goth Fairy Shimmer Bar

Here's another cute little spookle. This shimmer bar is a bit like the massage bars you get but it's packed full of shinies. I think this'll be good for wintery nights out. Mixing shinies with moisturiser, yes please. 

All in all the collection is pretty cute. I would have liked to see another bubble bar, maybe something that made the water purple as I feel that the bath bomb to bubble bath ratio is a bit off. I also would have liked to see another shower jelly like last year. They could have done a pumpkin shaped one or maybe something dark green and pine scented. That would have been awesome.

Review and Lips Swatches: Sleek Matte Me Ultra Smooth Matte Lip Cream - Cruelty Free

When I thought about writing this post I was like, "Sleek, there's a brand I don't own a lot of stuff by". Then I thought about it and realised I own enough that I could probably give a fairly decent assessment of the brand (these lipsticks, a Primer, 2 Eyeshadow Palettes, a Cheek and Eye Palette and the Solstice Highlighter palette that's super famous).

Top to Bottom: Petal, Shabby Chic and Velvet Slipper

I'm always a little hesitant when it comes to square tubes, as if the caps don't line back up right it just bugs me. These have been designed to only do one complete turn so if you put the Sleek logo to the front and then put it on it ends up right where it should be. Its so satisfying.

Other than that, the packaging is very nice. I feel like the Primark ones might have based their packaging on these (full review of the Primark Liquid Lipsticks here). Its really sturdy and unlike the Primark ones the plastic is thick and heavy enough to stop it feeling cheap.

Top to Bottom: Petal, Shabby Chic and Velvet Slipper.

So I own three of these. Petal and Shabby Chic which I have had for a very long time, and Velvet Slipper, which I got more recently. In the top picture of the tubes Petal and Shabby Chic look very similar however once you have them out and swatch them you can how different they are. Petal is a very pale pinky colour and Shabby Chic is more of a grey-tone mauve colour.

Petal

Petal is a gorgeous soft pink. This ones doe-foot applicator is different to the others. Its longer and skinnier which makes the colour harder to apply. Also as this formula is the lightest and the thinnest out of the three it needs two coats. The doe-foot being weird makes it harder to apply and it can look a  little streaky. Once its on it lasts a really long time though so its worth the extra effort.

Shabby-Chic

If I had to compile a list of my five all time favourite lipsticks, Shabby-Chic would feature in there somewhere. This one has a regular doe-foot and probably the best formula out of all three. It only needs one coat and the grey-mauve colour is surprisingly wearable. If I had to recommend any of these shades it would be this one.

Velvet Slippers   

So Velvet Slipper looks like a soft reddy-purple in the tube but once I put it on and built it up, so it wasn't patchy, it turns out super dark. As you can see from the arm swatch, one coat leaves it super patchy.  Once its built up it does feel a little thick and chunky, but no worse than one coat of some LA Splash shades I own. 

I decided to wear test this shade as it as the most noticeable, so any changes or rubbing would be more apparent than the others.

So here's an update photo four hours, two cups of tea, some biscuits and a plate of pasta later. As you can see there is some wear and tear around the inside of my lips, but considering I ate a whole plate of pasta and cheese sauce, I'm really impressed. That level of sauce and oil would strip a Kat Von D or an LA Splash clean off my face. These are under half the price of both those brands so for it to have broken down this little is amazing.

So, to summarise, I think these lipstick are really good value and although the formula and applicator vary from colour to colour they all still perform really well. If I had to recommend one it would be Shabby Chic which I think is the best overall. I'd be interested to try more of them, however I have so many matte lipsticks, I'd probably just try them a couple of times then they're sit at the back of my lipstick drawer.

Review: Primark PS... Love to Glow Face Mask - Cruelty Free Skincare

If you've read any of my other posts, and I mean any, you'll know I love a beauty bargain. Back in mid July I finally tried some of the PS... range from Primark, with mixed results (lip liner, yes. Eyeshadow, total failure). However with the vast majority of the products being under £5 (right within my budget) I decided to give some more ago before I made my mind up completely.

A while ago I found myself on Sauchiehall street, an area of Glasgow I don't usually get a chance to visit, with some time to kill. So I had a wee gander at some of the shops that are out that way, especially Tiger (love me some Tiger), and ended up in Primark. My first thought was heck, this one is far cleaner and tidier than my local one. The make-up and beauty area in this one is up the escalator, so I guess people are less likely to run in, rip stuff, make a mess, and leave. I got to actually look at things without the fear of getting covered in something broken and icky.

One of the first things that caught my eye was this mask. It is the PS... Love to Glow face mask with Argan Oil and Vitamin E. And costs £3 for 50ml (1.69 US Fl. Oz.). Pretty cheap for the amount you get. Also up until then I wasn't even aware Primark made skincare, I thought it was just make-up and a limited amount of hair care. So I had to try it, for science.

Packaging wise, the box is ok. Its a box, it describes the contents, its not ugly. Job done. Now for the jar. Its glass, not plastic, which is a very nice touch, however the cheap lid lets it down. Also grey product, with a grey label and grey text, not a smart move. For £3, its pretty much what you would expect though.

First impressions, grey, mudlooking, pot of goop. Its really, really perfumed which is a bit offputting, but not so offputting I wouldn't rub it all over my skin and leave it there for ten minutes. Texture wise its thick and a bit grainy but not gloopy or super wet. Better than a foil package mask but not as nice as some of the "mud type" masks you get in tubes.

Proof I actually rubbed this stuff all over my face. I actually had to do it three times to get this post finished.

Ever pull a face and then think, oh god why? Yeah, thats me right now. Why did I do that? Yikes.

The first thing you notice when applying the mask, after the smell, is the cooling feeling. As it doesn't claim to be firming or tightening, so I think whatever is doing this has been added only to make your skin feel cooler and tighter as you sit with it on your face.








So this mask claims to be Exfoliating, Smoothing, Brightening and Moisturising. I'm just going to break it down one by one and let you know what I thought.

Exfoliating: I wouldn't say I found it exfoliating. I wash my face with super soft microfibre clothes so that might have had something to do with it. It is grainy so if you wet your hands and rubbed at it once its dry, it probably would exfoliate pretty well.

Smoothing: Yeah ok, my skin did seem a bit smoother. If that was its only function I would be disappointed though.

Brightening: Anything that rubs off dead skin should in theory brighten, right? I've never really thought of my skin as being dull so I don't know if it really needs brightened up. My skin does feel nicer once I've scrubbed it off though. So win, I guess.

Moisturising: My skin isn't super dry at the moment and, in all honesty, I've been missing moisturiser some evenings. Does it moisturiser? Probably. Did I notice? Nope. Mehh...

Overall this facemask is mehh. My skin feels nicer-ish when I've used it but nothing major. I had to use the mask three times to get this review finished so I feel like I got a fairly good idea of everything thing mask has to offer . It doesn't offer much.

4 out of 10. Try it if you're curious about the PS...Love rang as its not terrible, but if you're looking for amazing results, you wont get them here. Probably wouldn't recommend.

September Favourites - Cruelty Free Beauty Favourites

September has been more month than I can cope with. Five flights, two holiday destinations and a whole lot of jet-lag. For that reason I havent been using the same products religiously and so all my favourites are solely make-up (and one haircare product) and not that varied. Sorry folks.

Also last time I checked all the products featured here were completely cruelty free, however if anything has changed please let me know as I've been trying to be super strict regarding this.

Superdrug Hair Therapy Oil with Macadamia

This treatement was an absolute lifesaver on holiday. The conditioner I had packed would have been fine in the UK however with the extreme heat and humidity and the extra intense sun, my hair was soon a dry, frizzy mess. This treatement was really good and could be used both after washing when the hair was wet and then again during the day if it was getting dry and tuggy.

I've been using it since getting back to the UK as well and I really like how it leaves my hair shiny and healthy but not feeling heavy or weighed down. It also isn't so heavy it knocks the curl out my hair. I'd happily buy it again.

Collection Reviving Primer in Cool Rose

I've had this for a while now and I have a bit of a love hate relationship with it. I will never use it straight up and on its own however it is really nice and illuminating when its mixed in with another primer. I just feel like it gives my base a little extra something-something in the morning. 

Probably won't need to buy it again any time soon as its a huge tube and I only need a teeny bit. Would I buy it again though? Yeah, probably. Although by the time I'm done this there will probably be something else out I wan't to try.

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Project Chimps

I picked this up in the Sephora in Times Square for as its a really pretty colour and I was excited to finally try the formula. Up until after I got back from the States, Kat Von D was a brand we could not get over here. Now its available on the Debenhams website (and you can click and collect in store), this colour is a Sephora exclusive though.

This lipstick is just the perfect red colour for me, its not to pink, brown or blue for my liking. Its somewhere between red and terracota. Also although the formula is apparently hit and miss, this seems to wear really well on me. It does require a post lunch touch up though so its not maybe as everlasting as it claims.

And from the most expensive to maybe the cheapest on the list...

Collection Extreme Liquid Eyeliner in Brown

Up until recently I had forgotten how good these eyeliners were. The black is an extremely black black and wears for a very long time. Since re-discovering that one, I've gone back and bought them in all the other colours (brown, dark blue and purple), almost in an effort to re-live my late teens. 

As much as I love a black winged liner, the brown has proven much more wearable and its easier to hide any mistakes I make first thing in the morning. Also the formula builds really nicely so if I want a more vibrant colour I can work it that way.

Gosh To Be Cool in Copenhagen Palette

I was unsure about this palette when I picked it up. I like the cool tones but are these too cool for even me? I'm still not sure but I've been loving the top row mixed with either the left or right shade in the middle. I have reached for it every morning since I bought it and the shades are so nice and blendable that I've even started getting adventurous and mixing them with other colours to make brighter eye looks. 

I'm really tempted to pick up one of the other palettes from this line and compare the formulas. They have a really bright one that I kind of fancy but have no idea what I'd do with. I'll maybe get that and just pretend in my head its the new Urban Decay Spectrum Palette. Dam I want that palette.

NYX Fireball Prismatic Eyeshadow Mono

This eyeshadow is amazing. Its just BAMMM. So pretty and reflective. Not one for work though.

I'd be really interested to try more of these as this one is so pretty. If you like colour then go into Boots and swatch them. You're welcome.

MUA Undress Your Skin Highlighter in Pink Shimmer

So I've been looking for a good stand alone highlighter for a while and when I had this one recommended to me, I was like. Really..? MUA are a dirt cheap drugstore brand, and although some of their products are pretty good (I did a first impression/ review of their Inkd Stains here)

the only powder products of theirs I've tried are the Loose Powder and Hydrating Face powder. Those powders are nice, but they're nothing special.

This highlighter though... Hot Dam. I'm in love. It starts of subtle but if you go in with a second swipe, it builds super quickly. The pink tones are quite subtle, and its not as bright as any of the other pinks I own, however they are more than enough to stop it looking frosty. It might be me tripping too, but I think theres almost a cool blue sheen kicked off of it. I noticed it in a couple of different lights so I don't think I am.

Kiko Milano Cocoa Shock Blush Duo in 03 Adorable Pink and Peach

Kiko are a brand that are fairly new to me. The store hasn't been opened on Buchanan Street that long (and even if it had, I'm hardly ever passing so they would probably still be new to me), and the store in Silverburn hasn't opened yet. I've had a couple of bits but the only one to make it into my everyday routine is this one. Specifically that peach shade. 

Its a gorgeous soft shade that builds really well. It also works nicely with the MUA highlighter which makes mornings so much easier when I'm half asleep.

So thats what I've been loving this month. Hopefully October will be a little more settled and I can use the same products for at least a couple of weeks and find something I love

Holiday Haul - What I bought in the USA

USA! USA!

As y'all know, I went away for the first time in a lot of years this month, and as a make-up obsessed twenty something, I acknowledged I would no doubt break the bank a little when I got to play in Sephora. I also visited a huge discount outlet mall in Florida, to pick up a new Kipling bag, an ended up in a large beauty discount shop. That was fun. Also all the Burt's Bees, cause I love their stuff and its so expensive in the UK.

I think the best part of the whole haul was realising that I hadn't been charged for Hangry. I wouldn't have even noticed if I hadn't dropped the Sephora bag and had some of the contents spill out. Because it was dark and I couldnt really see the ground under the table I just had to pick stuff up and check the receipt, and yeah, free lipstick. Woop woop.

Worst part. Accidentally spilling some of the All Nighter setting spray on the hotel room floor. Couldn't work out how to open it as it seemed too tight to just pull it off so I thought it was a screw cap. Its not and cause its so tight it took the spray top off with it. Oops.

Before I sign off I just want to say I do not normally spend this much money on myself and this size of haul is really rare. I was on holiday and had saved because I wanted to buy beauty products when I was out there. Alot of these products and brands are harder to get in UK (Tarte is pretty much impossible if you don't want charged Customs VAT as well) and they are all more expensive here. To put that into perspective, I got the Urban Decay Electric Palette for $23 (£17.60 GB). In the UK that palette retails for £35 ($45.60) so it was almost exactly half price.

  I also got a lot of travel sized products to try and see if I like them before purchasing a full sized one or because I know I like them but won't use a full sized one.

M&S Limited Collection Lipsticks & Lip Lacquers - With Swatches

So right before my holiday I was in the beauty section of Marks and Spencers "testing" expensive handcream and perfume when I came across these multipacks. I'd just gotten paid and decided that I would give them a go.  They were a gamble though as there was no way for me to swatch them in store and as they were cheap, they could be nasty.

Limited Collection Shades of Plum Lipstick Collection 3 Pack £12

 These packs come in three different sets, Shades of Red, Shades of Pink and Shades of Plum. I got the plum ones as they were the most different from anything I owned. That way, if they were decent and usuable I wouldnt have too much cross over.

I'm not sure if I love or hate the packaging. It feels very cheap and bulky, and with the cap on it looks like the cheap makeup you get on the dimly shelves next to the proper makeup displays in shops like Savers. When the caps off though, I dont hate it. If it was all silver with a clear cap it might have looked better. I'm not sure.

And look at these swatches.  I was so disappointed. The colours look so nice in the tubes but there is next to no pigmentation there. I had to actually try and build Plum up so you could see it more. They perform even worse on the lips, I've tried both Mallow and Grape and I had to re-apply every time I drank or ate anything. Every single time. And sometimes in between. 

They also have that weird cheap lipstick smell, not the watermelon one, the fake vanilla frosting one. Its just yuck.  I expected more from Marks & Spencers. I recently got given a Barry M lipstick that had amazing pigmentation, staying power and no nasty fake smell. I personally consider Barry M a cheap and fairly nasty brand, so for me to say I their lipstick is far better these should tell you everything you need to know. 

Limited Collection Pastel Pop Lip Lacquer 3 Pack £8

This was the only colour this set came in. I think these colours are really cute, so I would have picked them. The colours aren't named so I think I'll call them the pink one, the nude one and the orange one.

I actually really like the packaging. The squeezy tubes are a nice change to the standard clearly plastic viles liquid lipsticks usually come in and the gold caps are just enough to make them look chic without being over the top. The doe-foot applicators are really nice as well. The stick isn't too long (like the Kat Von D ones) and the doe foot isn't too big (like the NYX Liquid Suede ones) or weirdly bendy.

After the disappointment of the other lip products I really wasn't expecting much however these are really nice. Look at those colours. Especially that orange.  Love orange lip products.

So these are a bit weird. The apply really nicely, like a lip cream. The don't matte down and dry like most liquid lipsticks but aren't shiny and glossy. They also aren't sticky like a gloss. Its doesn't smell bad, I actually dont think it smells of much, although it does have a slight smell.

The only downside is that because it doesn't fully dry down, it can be quite smudgy. I loose half of it to my mug every time I have a cup of tea. I have worn it out and if you're out and about (cough*at the pub*cough) and drinking through a straw, it does last far better than any other liquid in its price range.

Also check how good the orange looks with my sunglasses.

Holiday Packing - Summer Beauty Haul & Review

So I planned on having this post up before I went on holiday but that didn't happen. I wanted to discuss why I bought what I had, I'm going to do a mini review instead though. Good times.
 
I'm going to split this into three categories, skin care, hair care and sun care. Two products a peice.Theres also a fail with a funny photo coming at the end, so we'll all get a laugh. Everything featured here is cruelty free as well. 

Skin Care

Yes to Carrots Night Cream

I knew my skin was going to take a beating abroad. I break out at the thought of applying sunscreen to my face, and true to form, I had face demons from day two. For that reason I wanted any other products I was using to be very gentle, calming and without too many harsh scents or colours.

This cream is nice, it soaks in easily and does hydrate well. The texture kind of reminds me of Sudocrem nappy cream. It has that same almost dry texture when you rub it on your face. That's the only similarity to baby's butt cream though.

 My least favourite thing is thing about it is the way it smells. As there's no added fragrance it just smells like the base they've used and its not the nicest. I can live with it though. I can think of a lot of things I put on my body that smell way worse.

Would I buy it again? Maybe. Its not my favourite and I'm sure there are far better creams out there. I'm probably going to go back to the Soap and Glory Beauty Sleep Enhancer, once I'm finished this and some of the other creams I have in the bathroom. If I can't find something I want or the Soap and Glory cream is out of stock when I need a new one, then I'd repurchase.

Lush Eau Roma Water Toning Water

Lets be honest here, I only bought this so I could spray myself in the face with something cold when I got too hot. And it smells funky. I do like that about it.

OK, I don't really think I can give this a fair review. I don't use a toner everyday. I never have and its just a whole other thing I'll research one day but I don't feel I need in my life. Right now my routine is face wash and moisturiser and that usually does me pretty well. I really did just want the novelty, and I mean I pre-planned buying this so I knew what I was doing, of being able to cool my face off with a spray bottle type product.

This was nice, it was refreshing, the smell is good. I've been spraying it on my face in the middle of my skincare routine, after wash but before moisturiser, and I can't say its doing anything except making my face smell pretty. Who knows?

Would I buy it again? Nope. I like the smell and its fun but that's it.

Hair Care

Lush Jason and the Argon-oil Shampoo

Lush's solid shampoo bars are just about my favourite shampoos on the market. I have 3 favourite bars Braziliant, Montalbano and this one. Its a lovely rose scented bar that lathers really well and leaves my hair lovely and shiny. I still have loads of this bar left as they last a really long time and are great value for money.

Would I buy it again? Definitely. But I won't need to for a while which is great.


Sugar Daddy-O Solid Conditioner 

I don't normally get solid conditioner, and when I have in the past I've always opted for Jungle. When I was in-store buying this stuff two staff members recommended this one though.

Personally that may have been the wrong decision. It smells really nice and reminds me a little of Parma Violets although it doesn't directly smell of them. Its more solid than Jungle and I found it harder to use though. It also probably wasn't thick enough to tame my wild hair. If I combined it with a lot of the leave in Macadamia Oil treatment I sometimes use then I got OK results, but that made my hair feel more heavy than I like.


Would I buy it again? Probably not. Will I use it up? Yeah, its not terrible.

Sun Care

Superdrug Solait Factor 50 Sun Spray

I hate suncreen. I need it though. I burn so quickly and so badly, its almost like one of the X-men but I have the worst power possible. I really hate the horrible, sticky, gloopy creams so this seemed like a good idea.

Overall it wasn't bad. It was easy to apply, didn't smell and the whole time I used it, I did not burn. Exactly what I want in a sunscreen.

Would I buy it again? Yeah, its fine, reasonably priced and cruelty free.

Superdrug Solait 50+ Anti-Aging Face Fluid

 Further to my previous rant about my deep rooted hatred of sunscreen, it gets worse.  The feelings I have about rubbing sunscreen on my body get amplified about a hundred times when it comes to putting it on my face. Sunscreen usually breaks me out like crazy as well, especially down my nose and thats an area that usually doesn't get too spotty and bad.

 I wanted to mininise the amount this happened so I thought I'd try a specialised face cream in the hopes it would moisturise and protect without the added face demons.

Did it work?.... Nope. The first full day it was fine, no problem and it seemed nice. However by mid way through day two I had a nice strip of spots down my nose. I tried to keep going with but the next day forehead and chin had completely broken out too and I had to give up. My other half kept using it though and he was totally fine. I think with these kind of products its all down to skin type.

Would I buy it again? Not for me. If my boyfriend asked for sunscreen for a trip he was going on then I might get it for him though. Not a bad product, just not for me.

Shiny, orange and gross (just check out my hairline, eyebrows and the marks on my neck).

I showed this photo to a girl in work and she actually thought I had some kind of peel off mask on. I 100% would not recommend this. It went straight in the bin after I took this photo. 

If you do have pale skin and are looking for a tinted moisturiser/BB cream type product, I would recommend the Autograph Illuminating Touch Tinted Moisturiser in light from M&S. Its more pricey at £9.50 but if you're like me; pale as can be, hate heavy products that require a lot of work and don't want to end up looking tangerine, its a good all rounder.
